Western Sydney Lakes hosts life-saving aviation training

Western Sydney Lakes is proud to provide a training ground for Coulson Aviation, NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) and NSW State Emergency Service (SES).

Our unique landscape has become a practice site for these crucial organisations, providing crews with the optimal setting to prepare for the moments that matter most.

With its combination of uninterrupted land and expansive freshwater waterways, Western Sydney Lakes provides an environment that closely mirrors real-world conditions firefighters and rescue teams may encounter across the state. This makes it an ideal location for both water and land-based exercises, where crews can sharpen their skills and train for emergency response in lifelike scenarios.

Coulson Aviation is a global leader in aerial firefighting, operating across Canada, the United States and Australia, and partners with the NSW RFS and NSW SES to manage and operate their fleet of emergency service aircraft.

The NSW RFS itself is the world's largest volunteer fire service, with over 70,000 volunteers providing fire and emergency services to more than 95 percent of NSW. While NSW SES plays a vital role in responding to natural disasters, including floods, storms and tsunamis across the state, and often works alongside the RFS and other agencies in critical rescue operations.

Training in this environment is essential for the success of the services. The ability to practice winch training and carry out recertifications ensures these firefighting and emergency services remain ready to meet the increasing challenges posed by Australia’s bushfire seasons.

We are proud to provide a safe and functional space where essential training can take place, and support the people who protect us and our communities.

This partnership reflects what Western Sydney Lakes is all about – creating spaces that serve the community today, while shaping a resilient and sustainable future for tomorrow.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians, the Darug Peoples, of the land on which Western Sydney Lakes is located.

We respect their enduring cultural and spiritual connection to this special place, most notably characterised by the Nepean waterways and the Blue Mountains escarpment. We will work in a respectful manner with Aboriginal people in Caring for Country and aim to celebrate Aboriginal history, culture, customs and beliefs.
